The property has been well known in France for many centuries and was once the country residence of Louis XIV’s bodyguard, a Monsieur Lacroix Maron, whose wine-making family is credited as having invented the double distillation process used in the making of cognac. The chateau changed hands over the years and was eventually bought by Alan Johnson-Hill, in 1978. He immediately embarked on an ambitious restoration program, revitalizing the vineyard, modernizing the estate, and building the Château Méaume brand through his marketing expertise and gregarious personality. In early 2019, Mark Johnson-Hill, Alan’s nephew and godson took over the vineyard, thereby continuing the family traditions of this beautiful estate.
Château Méaume is a 250-acre estate, with 100 acres under vine and the rest of the land divided evenly between forest and pasture. All aspects of the estate are centered on sustainability, through good agricultural practices in the vineyard, preservation of the forests and natural animal raising in the pastures.
As for the vines, they are predominately Merlot, with parcels of Cabernet Franc. Only grapes grown from the vineyard are harvested and fermented in the onsite cuves to produce the finest wine for Château Méaume.
